TOKYO — The Japanese government is expected to invite Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Japan next month, seeking to pave the way for a state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Moves to host the leader of the world’s second-biggest economy began last year when Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and national security adviser Takeo Akiba made separate trips to Beijing. The next step will have senior Chinese officials visiting Japan.
