TOKYO — Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is aiming on Monday to win approval from the lower house of parliament to remain as Japan’s leader despite his Liberal Democratic Party losing its majority in the chamber in a snap general election last month.

The vote to fill the position of head of government will be cast by members of the House of Representatives, selected on Oct. 27, and the upper house. Both the LDP and its coalition partner Komeito failed to win enough seats to secure a majority but opposing parties could not come together to forge one either.
